1. Installing the FTDI virtual COM port driver

first, download the FTDI virtual COM port driver:

2. Installing Max/MSP

you do not need to purchase max/msp

the runtime is sufficient to use the patches available here on the wiki. if you’d like to experiment/learn max/msp, we highly suggest trying out their 30-day demo.

3. download quicktime

some max/msp functionality requires quicktime.

4. Download monome Max/MSP examples and applications

you will need a package of base patches to route serial, OSC, and midi:

4b. download monome serial for xp

monome serial is a small app the communicates with the 40h, serving as a router between the hardware and various apps via MIDI and OSC

5. Using the 40h

once all the software has been installed and your computer has been restarted, follow these instructions to start playing:

1. plug in the device
2. load monome serial
3. run _40h_test.mxb from the base patches

troubleshooting

the forum has many documented debugging sessions. most of them result from skipping a step in the above setup procedure.
