h1. Installation and setup instructions

to use 40h on Mac OS X and Windows there are a few bits of software you
need to download and install.

* 1. the FTDI virtual com port driver

* 2. the serialio application (either SerialIO.app or the serialio
source code package which includes the serialio command line tool
for Mac OS X or serialio_40h, a Max/MSP version of serialio that
works on Windows)

* 3. Cycling 74�s Max/MSP (either the runtime environment or the demo
if you want to experiment with making your own patches)

* 4. CNMAT�s open sound control Max objects (Mac OS X only)

* 5. the sample patches (mlr, step, etc.)

h2. 1. Installing the FTDI virtual COM port driver

first, download the FTDI virtual COM port driver from

h2. 3. Adding the CNMAT OpenSoundControl objects to Max/MSP (Max OS X only)

once you�ve installed a version of Max/MSP you must add cnmat�s open sound control objects, which you can find at:

Mac OS X users must first download the OS9 versions of the OpenSoundControl and otudp objects from:

serialio is a simple routing program that communicates with 40h, translating serial messages into open sound control messages and sending them out a udp socket and translating incoming open sound control messages and sending them to 40h. download either the application (for people who like double-clicking) from:

h2. 4b. Download serialio_40h (Windows only)

serialio_40h is a Max/MSP version of the serialio application. serialio is primarily lstdc++ and STL based but makes sparing use of the Apple IOKit framework. until a windows port is available, windowsusers should use serialio_40h instead.
