the runtime is sufficient to use the patches available here on the wiki. if you'd like to experiment/learn max/msp, we highly suggest trying out their 30-day demo.

you might eventually want OSC, which is a network communications package. currently we haven't posted any patches that require this.

h2. 5. Download monome Max/MSP examples and applications

you will need a package of base patches to route serial, OSC, and midi:

app (max/msp) base patches

also available here are mlr and 64step, two of the applications featured in the 40h demonstration video.

h2. 6. Using 40h

once all the software has been installed and your computer has been restarted, follow these instructions to start playing:

* 1. check your control panel > system > device manager, and see which COM port your 40h is living on (the virtual serial port). if it is on a port above 4, change it to a port from 1-4.
* 2. open _40h_serial.mxb and select the port.
* 3. open _test_simple.mxb and see how it goes.

so the hardware works. now try out 64step or mlr2 of flip.

the forum has many documented debugging sessions. most of them result from skipping a step in the above setup procedure.
