h2. 3. Downloading monome serial
…
monome serial is a simple routing program that communicates with 40h, translating serial messages into open sound control messages and sending them out a udp socket and translating incoming open sound control messages and sending them to 40h.
…
…
…
…
h2. 5. Using the 40h
…
* 1. launch monome serial, switch to OSC mode
* 2. open _40h_test.mxb for the most basic test.
…
other patches/apps require the monome serial be running concurrently.
…
h1. troubleshooting
…
Content was also deleted

h2. 1. Installing the FTDI virtual COM port driver

h2. 1. Installing the FTDI virtual COM port driver

http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP/

h2. 2. Installing Max/MSP

http://cycling74.com/downloads/maxmsp

*you do not need to purchase max/msp*

get the newset version. 4.6 or later. the runtime is sufficient to use the patches available here on the wiki. if you'd like to experiment/learn max/msp, we highly suggest trying out their 30-day demo.

h2. 3. Downloading serialio

serialio is a simple routing program that communicates with 40h, translating serial messages into open sound control messages and sending them out a udp socket and translating incoming open sound control messages and sending them to 40h. download either the application (for people who like double-clicking) from:

http://monome.org/file/SerialIO.app.tar.gz

or the command line tool (for people who like the terminal, also necessary to specify ip addresses and ports to route messages to) with source code from:

http://monome.org/file/serialio-0.1.tar.gz

h2. 4. Download monome Max/MSP examples and applications

you will need a package of base patches to route serial, OSC, and midi:

app (max/msp) base patches

also available here are mlr and 64step, two of the applications featured in the 40h demonstration video.

h2. 5. Using 40h

once all the software has been installed and your computer has been restarted, follow these instructions to start playing:

* 1. launch SerialIO.app (10.3.9 users see troubleshooting below)
* 2. launch _40h_osc_osx.mxb
* 3. open _test_simple.mxb for the most basic test.

h1. troubleshooting

10.3.9 applescript is broken, so Serialio.app won't launch correctly. you'll have to run it manually from the terminal (which is in Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app)

given that you've copied Serialio.app into your Applications folder, run:

/Applications/SerialIO.app/Contents/Resources/serialio

(copy the line above, paste it in, and push return)

the forum has many documented debugging sessions. most of them result from skipping a step in the above setup procedure.

http://forum.monome.org
…
