…

clave machine is an algorithm that takes a simple drum-pattern and cuts it up given an algorithm found in clave_machine.pd_darwin. how the algorithm works is not important. those interested should look at the source file that can be found in clave_machine/src.

the lower four lines of the 40h function as a pattern input for the drummachine. in this implementation, only a single sound can be produced at a time. the playback of the pattern can be turned on and off with the space bar. the other large toggle button toggles between a simple analogue drummachine (same instruments as in pattern_sequencer) and a sample. the patch adjusts the tempo to the length of the soundfile.

the top four lines are used to input ratios. the ratio changes how the drumloop is read, screwing it up in interesting (and less interesting) ways. the first buttons of lines 5 and 7 function as phase triggers, screwing with the phase of each layer of the clave_machine algorithm. if both phase buttons are pressed at the same time, the phase is reset to zero.

so, how to play it?

make sure that the ratio buttons (top four lines) are aligned at something like 6:6 in each line. listen to the pattern until you have a good feel for the downbeat. try pressing the ratio buttons so you get something lie 5:6 or 7:6 in one of the ratio lines and immediately move it back to the 6:6 ratio. by experimenting with this you should be able to start breaking up the loop in silly ways, generateing breakbeats on the fly. so far I am getting the best results by varying rapidly around a fixed setting, occasionally allowing a distorted loop to run for a little while, while banging either of the phase buttons.
…
Content was also deleted
